Directed by Roman Polanski – ‘Carnage’ is a dark comedy that works on the power of razor sharp wit. The movie is being called one of the best comedies of the year – but ‘Carnage’ is not for the slapstick lovers.
Based on the French play ‘God of Carnage’ written by Yasmina Reza. Polanski shifts the action from Paris to Brooklyn and transforms Jodie Foster, John C Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz in to two sets of bickering American parents.
According to the plot Alan and Nancy Cowan (Waltz and Winslet) visit the house of Michael and Penelope Longstreet (Reilly and Foster). The Cowan and the Longstreet boys got in to a fight at the playground which resulted in Nancy and Alan’s son hitting Michael and Penelope’s son with a stick. The parents meet in the Longstreet house to settle the matter amicably.
Friday Release: Roman Polanski;s 'Carnage' is all dark humour
The plan was to keep the interaction brief but due to various circumstances the time the couples spend together keep getting extended. Initially the verbal exchange is civil but as differences start emerging the couples turn on each other and then amongst themselves. The verbal duel lays their characters bare exposing the flaws and the issues.
And keeping to the tradition of biting irony in dark comedies – the boys end up reconciling their differences on the playground minus the help of the adults who are bickering amongst themselves – and play time continues.
The screenplay of ‘Carnage’ has been written by Roman Polanski and Yasmina Reza. ‘Carnage’ has been produced by Saïd Ben Saïd, Oliver Berben and Martin Moszkowicz.

Investigators, who had pinned hopes on a CCTV footage for evidence in their probe into the assault case against Saif Ali Khan, were left disappointed with police saying on Thursday no video cameras were installed in the area where the brawl took place at a luxury hotel.
The 41-year-old Bollywood star, who has been booked for assaulting an NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma at a restaurant in Taj hotel following a complaint, meanwhile said the midnight brawl on Tuesday night is not a "publicity stunt" and that he felt sorry for what had happened.
"Though Saif and his lawyer have been claiming the complainant Iqbal Sharma made provocative statements or rather used abusive language against women with the actor and this led to the ruckus, there were no CCTVs installed at the place where the actor had allegedly punched the complaint on the nose," said an investigating officer at Colaba police station.
No CCTV footage in Saif Ali Khan brawl case: Police
"We could have made a strong case if we would have had the footage showing Saif hitting the complainant," the officer added.
Khan was last night arrested and released by police on bail after being charged with assaulting the Indian origin South African national Sharma, who protested the raucous chatter of the actor and his friends at 'Wasabi' restaurant. So far, statements of eight persons have been recorded in which except Sharma and his family members, nobody else had come forward to say that the actor had bashed up the victim, police sources said.
"I was hit first. And as shocking as it may seem, the elderly gentleman hit me. I'm not sure what provoked him. I was only defending myself. I don't think any gentleman would have behaved any differently than what I did. I am confident that justice will be done. I think they (police) have the CCTV footage from the restaurant and that will prove everything," Saif said last night. Saif also filed a counter-complaint with the police.
Speaking to reporters at an event in suburban Bandra, Saif said the incident was not a publicity stunt for his forthcoming film 'Agent Vinod'.
"This is not a publicity stunt (for the film). I hope this matter gets sorted out soon," he said.

Vidya Balan, whose film count includes mostly female-oriented themes, says the film industry changed over the years and co-incidentally she has become the face of this change.
"I believe that change doesn't happen overnight, it takes time. I am lucky that today when we are feeling the change, it's a co-incidence that I have become a face of this change," she said in an interview.
Vidya gave strong performances in 'Ishqiya', 'Paa', 'No One Killed Jessica' and 'The Dirty Picture'. The 33-year-old, who will be seen next in Sujoy Ghosh's 'Kahaani', feels lucky to be present at a time when such stories are being written.
'Pregnant' Vidya's search for her husband at railway station
"I am lucky to be a part of Indian cinema at a time when such stories and roles are being written and I am getting a chance to be a part of such good films. I try to do my work honestly. It feels great to get so much love from the people," said Vidya who had stormed the industry with her very first film 'Parineeta' in 2005.
Releasing March 9, 'Kahaani' is a thriller and shows a pregnant woman's struggle to find her missing husband in Kolkata.

Oscar pick of the day My Week With Marilyn

Michelle Williams who steps into Marilyn Monroe's dainty shoes in My Week With Marilyn talks about the challenges of donning the sexy image of the Hollywood diva and being pitched against Meryl Streep for this year's Oscar in the Best Actress category...
Was there any hesitation on your part in taking on such an iconic role, playing Marilyn Monroe?
I knew the moment that I closed the script that I was going to say yes, and that I wanted to play that part. And that was followed by a feeling of dread because I didn't know how I was going to do it. I knew I was in for the challenge of my adult work life. So there was hesitation but I had to ignore it because it wasn't getting me anywhere good.
In pics: Meet the Academy Award nominees

Tell us about your transformation into Marilyn?
Look, Marilyn's hot. So I had to practice the wiggle, I practiced the walk, balanced things on my head. And tried getting all the physical movements right.
Our generation knows Marilyn Monroe strictly as the icon and isn't really familiar with her films. How familiar were you with her work before you took on this project?
Not at all, really! I was familiar with her from her image. I had pictures of her in my bedroom when I was growing up, and I've always been drawn to her image. She transmitted so much through just a simple photograph.
When people talk about Marilyn, often the actual movies get lost. What's your favourite of her movies?
I know it's a cliche, but it has to be Some Like It Hot. It's the most artistic movie. The 'nobody's perfect' line at the end of the film is just genius. My other favourites are Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, River of No Return, because I like Preminger and I liked her in that movie. I like a lot of things in Seven Year Itch, but it was really stage-y for me. It was the least cinematic Billy Wilder movie I had ever seen. She is a shot of energy when she comes on screen.
The film takes place over the course of a week. Was it a challenge to distill the essence of Marilyn into such a small time frame, story-wise?
Actually, in some ways, it was a real comfort. This movie isn't a biopic. We don't start at the beginning and end at the end. It's not a tragedy. There are tragic elements to Marilyn Monroe. She carried them with her. But the movie itself isn't a tragedy. It's a moment in time, and some of that moment in time is a real fairy tale. And so I felt comforted by the fact that I didn't have an obligation to her whole life story.
You open the film singing the song Heat Wave. Was this your first time singing on camera?
Yes, my first time probably singing and dancing on camera. The last time singing and dancing was on a stage when I was 8 or 9.
How does it feel to be competing with Meryl Streep for the Best Actress in the Academy awards?
First of all, at least with the Golden Globes, thank God, we were both in different categories. At least for the first round, there was no competition. Meryl is seasoned at this, and this is my third nomination at the Oscars.
What is your expectations from the Indian audience?
It's a story of Marilyn Monroe and she was famous all over the globe. So I am very sure people are going to love the movie.
Would you ever want to visit India?
Yes, would love to. I have also heard it's a beautiful place. Looking ahead for a holiday soon.

Anyone who knows their Oscars knows that nominees' fashion plans are strictly top secret until the big day. They seem to be more revealing about their designer undergarments, though.
While it may fit into the too-much-information file, some of the year's most celebrated actors and directors aren't afraid to talk about the product placement underneath those tuxes and gowns.
"What I do, because I get chilly, I like to wear long johns. The full one with the trap door in the back," said a joking George Clooney, a double nominee for his leading role in "The Descendants" and his adapted screenplay for "The Ides of March."
Oscar nominees reveal red-carpet underwear secrets
Nominated "Descendants" director Alexander Payne declined to describe his planned underwear, so Clooney spoke for him.
"Garanimals," he said, referring to the children's clothing brand. "Underoos."
Octavia Spencer, supporting actress nominee for "The Help," will not be repeating the triple-Spanx approach she took at the Golden Globes.
"I want to be comfortable and look good and have fun," she said. "So I'm just going to do the normal one here, one there. (Laughs.) Here a Spank, there a Spank, everywhere a Spank-Spank."
The shaping undergarments have become such a red-carpet staple for women that Spanx introduced a men's line designed to boost pectoralis muscles and minimize guts.
Berenice Bejo, who is nominated for her supporting role in "The Artist," may be planning to work her sex appeal on the red carpet Sunday, where she'll be accompanied by her husband, nominated director Michel Hazanavicius of "The Artist."
"You mean Spank or no Spank?" Bejo asked when presented with the underwear inquiry. "I don't think so, because of the dress I'll have, I don't think I'll wear too much."
The Academy Awards will be presented Sunday at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Viola Davis knew she had big shoes to fill when she agreed to play the role of a lowly black maid to a rich white family in 1960s Mississippi in 'The Help'.
They included those of her mother, her late grandmother and thousands of African-American women who were maids themselves, many of whom would rather forget those years. Although Davis is now neck-and-neck with Meryl Streep for the best actress Oscar, she says her mother has yet to see 'The Help'.
"It's painful. You have a whole generation of women who don't want to be reminded of the past," Davis, 46, said.
'The Help': Bold, black and bidding for Oscar glory
Therein lies the paradox at the heart of 'The Help' and its chances for Oscars. It was a surprise summer box-office hit that exposed old, but not forgotten, racial divides in the United States. Its popularity could cause Oscar voters to choose it as the year's best movie, but the ugly history it replays might make them look the other way and cast a ballot for another nominee, especially frontrunner romance, 'The Artist'.
Based on the 2009 best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett, 'The Help' is the tale of a young white woman in Jackson, Mississippi who in 1963 asks African-American maids to help her write a book about their experiences working for white families in the early stages of the civil rights movement.
Among movie fans, 'The Help' has shown the greatest popular appeal of the nine films vying for best movie. With a $206 million global boxoffice - most of it from North America - and supported by fans of more than 10 million books sold worldwide, "The Help" was one of the top 15 movies of 2011.
Myrlie Evers-Williams, a former chair of the NAACP whose civil rights activist husband Medgar Evers was murdered in 1963 in Mississippi by a white supremacist, called it the 'most outstanding and socially relevant' movie of 2011.
In Hollywood, it has brought a slew of acting awards for its star, Davis, and supporting actress Octavia Spencer, who plays a sassy maid with an unusual method for vengeance through cooking. It has four Oscar nominations, including best motion picture.
Given the film's wide cultural impact and its shock top prize at the Screen Actor's Guild awards last month, 'The Help' could walk off with the best picture Academy Award.
"If there is a jawdropper on Oscar night, that is where it will come. I think 'The Artist' is way out front but 'The Help' is the sneaky underdog that is beloved and often that is what makes a winner," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com.
"It is not a movie with big Hollywood names. (But) it is widely-regarded as a well-crafted movie with an important message," he said.
Stereotype or cultural touchstone?
But not everyone shares the enthusiasm, particularly parts of the African-American community. Some 70 years after Hattie McDaniel became the first black person to win an Oscar (for her role as a maid in 'Gone With The Wind') critics say Hollywood is feting another film about the subjugation of black women.
Ida E. Jones, national director of the Association of Black Women Historians wrote in an open statement that far from being a progressive story of triumph over injustice, the way 'The Help' depicts black maids is a "disappointing resurrection of Mammy - a mythical stereotype of black women who were compelled either by slavery or segregation, to serve white families."
Nevertheless, the film has had a huge cultural impact in the U.S. since its release last August. Michael Taylor, film producer and chair of film and television production at the University of Southern California, said 'The Help' reminded Americans that discrimination is not a thing of the past.
"It comes at a time when people in this country had begun to think that we have an African-American president so maybe we don't need to deal with race relations anymore.
"But then along comes this movie which reminds us that maybe we need to take another look because we do in fact live in very segregated worlds," Taylor told Reuters.
If Davis and Spencer win best actress and supporting actress Oscars, they will join a small group of African-Americans to have won the honor including Halle Berry ('Monster's Ball') the only black female to have won in the lead actress category.
Davis was painfully aware of the responsibility on her shoulders when she signed up to play Aibileen Clark, a self-effacing maid who lovingly raises the children of her white employers but is forced to use a bathroom outside their home.
"I thought doing the movie was important because the maid hadn't been humanized before. I felt she remained a cardboard cut-out," Davis said. "Now I feel like my mother and my grandmother's lives have been acknowledged.
"There were so many followers of the book, so many people who had lived this life, who knew these people, so automatically you had big shoes to fill," she added.
O'Neil said Davis has emerged as a clear front-runner for Oscar, despite admiration for Streep and her "sledgehammer" performance as Britain's Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady'.
"Voting for Davis feels important, as if you were embracing a significant message sociologically and historically," he said.
As for Spencer, who plays outspoken maid Minny Jackson, O'Neil said she had an air of Oscar inevitability about her after sweeping the supporting actress awards this season.
"It is the one award that the film really deserves because she is the one who strikes out among the downtrodden and gets revenge in a shocking way. Her clever defiance and her enduring spirit is what the message of the movie is really all about," O'Neil said.

'Tezz' is an upcoming Hindi action thriller film directed by Priyadarshan. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Mohanlal, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Kangna Ranaut, Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan in main roles.
The stunt choreographer had been Gareth Milne, the stunt co-ordinator of 'Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer' and 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets' . Tezz was earlier titled 'Bullet Train'.

Shirish Kunder has uninhibitedly admitted that actress Sonakshi Sinha's role in his next directorial 'Joker' is 'cooler' than her part in her debut film 'Dabangg', which brought her instant success.
When a Twitterati asked Kunder: "Is Sonakshi's role cooler than 'Dabangg', please reply," he wrote back: "YES and she is there through the film."
Sonakshi, daughter of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha, was cast opposite Salman Khan in 'Dabangg'. She played his love interest in the movie.

Actor Saif Ali Khan, caught in an ugly hotel brawl that resulted in his brief arrest on Wednesday, said he was the victim in the entire incident in which an NRI businessman accused the actor of punching him following an altercation inside one of Mumbai's posh hotels.
"I was hit and was only defending myself," Khan said after being granted bail on a surety of Rs 3000. "Taj Hotel's CCTV cameras will prove what happened," he said.
"I have been to the police station to answer the requirements of law as I am a law abiding citizen. I have also filed a complaint about what happened last night and I am confident justice will be done. There was an ugly incident last night where my friends and the ladies with us were abused and I was assaulted," he said.
Khan said he hoped the media would remain impartial while the matter was being decided. "I don’t think any gentleman would have behaved differently."
On Iqbal Sharma, who accused Khan of punching him in the nose after Sharma objected to the din at the actor's table during dinner, Khan said "I have seen the interviews given on TV and they look like decent people. I cannot believe that the same people were so aggressive the night before... the lies that they are saying about me with such straight faces."
Mahesh Vasvani, the lawyer for Khan, said Saif did not get provoked.
However, reacting to Khan's statement, Iqbal Sharma's wife Tarina said, "It is absolutely untrue what Saif has said. The ladies with Saif were not touched. Saif was not attacked first. Nothing justifies hitting a 68-year-old man. In fact one of the waiters also saw Shakil Ladak hit my father and run away."

How is it like falling in love for the first time, is what actor Prateik is set explore in his new film 'Ekk Deewana Tha', which releases Friday. Directed by Gautham Menon, the film is a launchpad of British actress Amy Jackson.
A Hindi remake of Menon's Tamil movie 'Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa', the film also features Manu Rishi and Sachin Khedekar. The music of the film is composed by Oscar winner AR Rahman and it is being distributed by Fox Star Studios.
The story of the film revolves around Sachin, a regular 22-year-old engineering graduate from a middle-class family in Mumbai, who is in love with cinema and wants to carve a niche for himself in filmdom. But it was not easy to fulfill the dream -- like many others, he struggles and struggles and his only source of survival is his pocket money.
First Look: Prateik and Amy in 'Ek Deewana Tha'
While waiting for his big break, he meets Jessie and instantly falls in love with her. Jessie is a beautiful, elegant and smart girl, but belongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family, where watching movies, partying or falling in love are taboo.
Jessie, from her end, tries to forge a friendship, believing that hiding their feelings under the umbrella of friendship would save them heartache, tears and a full-blown family drama.
'Ekk Deewana Tha' is described as intense, yet feel good love story of two completely different characters and how they cooperate with the pangs and pleasure of first love.
This is Prateik's second solo venture after 'My Friend Pinto'. However, he has been part of multi-starrers like 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na', 'Dhobi Ghat' and 'Aarakshan'.
Well in sync with the theme of 'Ekk Deewana Tha', the music of the film was launched with much fanfare against the backdrop of the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra.
Rumours are abuzz that Prateik and Amy are dating each other ever since they met on the sets of the film, but they refuse to confirm or deny it. Prateik admits he would love to act with Amy again.
Rahman was caught up in a controversy following objections from a Christian group over the use of the word "Hosanna" in a song from the film. The Mozart of Madras clarified saying he didn't intend to hurt anyone's sentiments.
"As with any film project I work on, I had spent several months researching before composing and writing all the songs for 'Ekk Dewaana Tha' and had consulted friends who are Christian in particular about the use of the word 'Hosanna' in this song," Rahman said.
Rahman rarely gets involved in promotional activities for any film but he agreed to shoot a promotional video for the film, while singing a track "Kya hai mohabbat".
Prateik's last solo release "My Friend Pinto" failed to rake in moolah at the box-office, so now he pins hope on this film.
